Summary of Outcomes from 8 August Golf Club Committee Meeting

Summary of Outcomes from 8 August Golf Club Committee Meeting

The following is a summary of the outcomes from the meeting:

  • Discussion between Murray and the AFSC continue regarding the arrangements for prizes.  We will continue to update members when the outstanding issues are resolved.
  • Gold cladding on the outside of the club premises – work to refresh this and the surrounding area will be undertaken in November (when the warmer weather arrives).  There will be some minor inconvenience to members as a result of the scaffolding.
  • Two new travelling sprinklers have been purchased and trialed on various parts of the course.  These will help greens staff water parts of the course not serviced by the irrigation system.  They will throw water around 40 meters and will help in area of rough and on fairways such as the 16th where it it is difficult to water  some parts of the fairway, particularly the approach to the Green (before crossing the bridge).
  • An AFSC Point of Sale terminal will soon be installed in the Pro-shop.  More information about how best to use this closer to installation. Members will have received an email  from Murray on this.
  • There are a number of Honour Board event coming up in the next few months.  Members should watch for nomination forms and try to find time to play in the various events, if they are eligible.  Check the Members Handbook for the exact dates.  The event include: Mixed Foursomes (Nomination form released), Junior Classic and the GLGC Men’s and Women’s Open.
  • A number of trees have been earmarked for removal, as the growing season approaches. A number of Poplars will be removed due to the pervasive nature  and shallowness of their root systems. These trees in particular, can damage golf equipment and the machinery used on the course.  Other work will include the thinning of the Eucalypts behind the 11th green (shady all through Winter), as well as the thinning of Casuarinas at the watercourse beside the 12th.  The work is scheduled for the last week of August.
  • Golf Course Renovations 2019: As per annual maintenance program for the Greens, renovations are scheduled for the week of 21 – 25 October (weather permitting) This follows the Club Championships.
  • There was discussion about the use of the Blue Tees by members, when not playing in competitions.  We had earlier agreed to let members use these tees when practicing or playing socially.  We have rethought this as we are starting to see damage that is not repairing (divots) on these tees, particularly on the par 3s.  The committee has decided to revert to the previous arrangement with Members not practicing  or playing socially off these tees.  This will enable the Tees to be in the best possible condition for the competition rounds.  A notice will be posted on this issue.
  • Work on the bitumen path leading to the pro shop has been completed. Thanks to Norm Loughton for his project management of this work.

Post the meeting:

  • The Men’s Matchplay final was played on Wednesday 14th of August with John Purcell winning 6 and 5.  Congratulations to John.  It was a long haul but, worth it in the end to have a Matchplay champion for 2019.
  • Yellow Tee comp: The first of these games played on a Sunday afternoon and did not attract a field.  We will rethink this competition and its timing.  It is likely that we will move it to Friday afternoon when the warmer weather starts and we have the daylight for longer.  We will continue with the occasional Sunday trial with tee times reverting back to normal competition, if not booked by the Friday morning.
