Management of Competitions, Pro Shop Accounts and Prizes….

Management of Competitions, Pro Shop Accounts and Prizes….

From 1 October 2019, there will be some changes to the management of Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club (GLGC) committee competitions, Pro Shop competitions, the rules around pro shop accounts and prizes.  The changes have arisen through negotiations between Ainslie, the committee and the Pro Shop.  The revised arrangements are detailed below.

GLGC Committee Competitions

The GLGC committee runs competitions on most Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.  The cost of committee competitions will remain at $10.  This fee is made up of GST ($0.91), the course management levy ($1.82 – ie $2 less $0.18 GST), prizes ($5.09 – which is 70% of the eligible prize pool) and funds for the committee ($2.18).  The course management levy is to assist in funding capital works and maintenance of the golf course, for example, to help fund the irrigation system and the top dressing of fairways etc.  The funds for the committee cover the cost of trophies and other committee related activities.  Occasionally, if there is a combined single and team event on the same day the competition fee will be $12.  The full additional $2 (less $0.18 GST), is allocated to the team prize pool.

Pro Shop Competitions

The GLGC Pro Shop runs competitions every Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as Saturdays and Sundays over the Christmas period.  The cost of Pro Shop competitions is $12.  This fee is made up of GST ($1.09), the course management levy ($1.82), prizes ($6.36 – which is 70% of the eligible prize pool) and funds for the pro shop ($2.73).  Similarly, if there is a combined single and team event on the same day the competition fee will be $14.  The allocation of prizes is in line with the Pro Shop contract to allocate 70% of the eligible prize pool to prizes.

The Pro Shop also runs the Spring Classic over the October long weekend and the Volkswagen Scramble where the competition costs are normally higher.

Pro Shop Accounts

The GLGC Pro Shop maintains two accounts for each member, a Main Account and a Ball Account.

Main Account

The Main Account is for the credit of major competition prizes won by members in any GLGC Committee or Pro Shop competitions, for example, if you come either first, second or third in a competition.  The Main Account can be used for the purchase of equipment, golf balls, golf lessons, carts, range balls as well as other pro shop services.  For clarification, the Main Account cannot be used to pay for entry fees to competitions.

If you win a major prize in a GLGC committee competition only, you will have one month from the date you won a major prize, to choose how you wish to spend that prize.  You have two options.

1) keep your prize in your Main Account (this is the default position) to spend in the Pro Shop, or
2) have your prize value allocated to your Ainslie membership card (as points).  This allows you to spend your prize winnings in the club on food and beverages.

For this to occur you need to contact the Pro Shop (within one month of your major prize win), who will arrange the transfer from your Main Account to points on your Ainslie membership card.  It should be noted that points transferred to your membership card from major prizes cannot be used to be put towards your yearly golf membership.

If you win a major prize in a Pro Shop competition, the prize remains in your Main Account to be spent in the Pro Shop.

Ball Account

The Ball Account is for placegetter prizes of $5 won in any GLGC committee or Pro Shop competition.  The value of the placegetter prize is now $5 in all competitions and can only be used for the purchase of golf balls in the Pro Shop, hence the title of Ball Account.  Further, if you are fortunate enough to get an eagle, the Eagles Nest prize will also go into your Ball Account.  Only members are eligible to win the Eagles Nest.

The Ball Account can now be converted to a dollar value to purchase golf balls.  For example, if you have won the equivalent of 15 golf balls (ie $75 worth of golf balls), you can now purchase any kind of golf balls to the value of $75 at the current Pro Shop advertised price for those balls.

Hole-in-one prize

If you are lucky enough to get a hole-in-one in a registered GLGC committee or Pro Shop competition you are eligible to win the hole-in-one prize of $750.  This prize is fully funded by Ainslie.  Only members are eligible to win the hole-in-one prize.

You then have up to three options:

1) have the money, part or in full, allocated to your Pro Shop Main Account to be spent in the Pro Shop,
2) have the money, part or in full, allocated to points on your Ainslie Card to be used for food and beverages, or
3) have the money, part or in full, put towards your next year’s golf membership.

To allow for more flexibility, a member can split the hole-in-one prize up to 3 ways.  For example, a member may choose to put $250 in each category, or put $500 in one and $250 in another.

You should contact the Golf Manager as soon as practicable after your hole-in-one to advise your preferred options.  The Golf Manager will then organise this directly with Ainslie.

GLGC Pro Shop

The GLGC Pro Shop provides an excellent service to members and we encourage all members to support our Pro Shop.  I encourage members to work with the Pro Shop team in getting the best possible price for their golfing gear.

Summary from the 12 September Golf Club Committee meeting…..

Summary from the 12 September Golf Club Committee meeting…..

  • Discussions with Murray – These  are now concluded. Members should read the post on the Website  (posted PM on 23 Sept) to familarise themselves with agreede arrangements for prizes.
  • Membership fees for 2020 – The Golf Club and AFSC have finalised the 2020 fees and letters have gone to members. Increases are moderate ($50 for a full member and pro-rata for the other categories) and a $20 increase to the water level.
  • AFSC Point of Sale terminal – The Point of Sale terminal is now operating with members able to transfer their club winning to the Ainslie Club card within 30 days of winning a prize. Read more about this in the post on prizes.
  • Australian Boys Amateur Championships –  The club will be one of the Canberra host clubs for this event in April of 2020.  It is recognition for the quality of our course and management of past events at the club.
  • New Water Bubbler – Installation is complete. The bubbler is located in the area near the 1st and 14th  tee boxes and will assist in meeting our obligations under the Club’s Heat Policy.
  • Course maintenance  – Sanding of the fairways is now complete.  Additional work to be done over the coming months including Greens renovations after the Club Championships.
  • Objects and Rules – A revision of the Club’s Objects and Rules s progressing with a final draft to be considered by the Board of the AFSC at an upcoming Board meeting.  The revised document will then be made available to Golf Club members for review and comment before ratification at an Extraordinary General meeting in October.  Key changes are:
    • Minor changes to first couple of pages to the document to update the terminology used  throughout the documents
    • Capturing the processes we now use for new members and more accurately titling the membership categories and core entitlements for each of these .
    • Revisions to the process of voting for new Committee Office Bearers and Members.  In the past this was very manual and paper based .  We have now written into the document the procedures for electronic voting and a slightly refined process for nominating for the Committee.  Nominating for the Committee is still in writing and with a proposer and seconder.
    • Better formatting the document and make it easier to read  and understand.
  • Greens’ Staff – CEO AFSC has given permission for an Apprentice to be employed. This will help Shane and the team with the maintenance of the course.
  • Lifestyle membership – New arrangements for Flex 20 (now Lifestyle) for the 2020 golfing year. Information provided to members in recent Splash article on the new arrangements.
  • AGM is scheduled for 23 November.  Nominations for the Committee will soon be called for, as is required in the Objects and Rules.
  • Guidance Statements – A number of Guidance Statements have had minor changes made.  Guidance statements are available on the website and members should review these. Latest one to be adjusted is Reciprocal Club and Gust Playing Rights.
