COVID-19 restrictions to remain in place

COVID-19 restrictions to remain in place
The Committee has received a number of requests in recent weeks for a relaxation of the current modified Rules of Golf implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the queries have been focussed on play for the Club Championships.

After consulting with the ACT District Golf Association and Golf NSW a decision has been made to keep the current arrangements in place. In particular, this means:

  • Flagsticks are to remain in position at all times. We will however, trim some of the noodle pieces in the holes to ensure that the ball sits below the rim once it enters the cup.
  • Bunker rakes will not be returned, meaning that preferred lies (within a club length) will remain in the bunkers until further notice. We ask players to continue smoothing the surface as best as you can with your foot or club. Bunkers will be freshly prepared at commencement of each day’s play during the Club Championships.
  • Players are to continue marking their own scorecard, and where using a paper scorecard must write the name of their marker where the marker would normally sign.

  • While not COVID-19 related, a decision has also been taken to retain preferred lies on closely mown areas. Thanks to the amazing work of Shane and his team, our fairways are either already in amazing shape, however, there are a few areas that still need further time to recover before we can confidently remove this rule.
Failure to comply with the rules around flagsticks and bunkers will incur in a 1 shot penalty, and failure to correctly complete a scorecard will result in disqualification.

We strongly suggest you review the full local rules which can be found here, and in the MiScore App.
We know these decisions will come as a disappointment to some of our members, however, we ask for your understanding at this time as we continue to prioritise the health and safety of our members and visitors.

We will continue to monitor changes in ACT Government advice around community sport and the position of the ACT DGA, and will make changes to these rules when it is considered safe to do so.

Daylight Savings means Friday afternoon golf is back.

Daylight Savings means Friday afternoon golf is back.
Friday afternoon Chook Run

With the arrival of warmer weather and longer days we will be running a nine hole yellow tee competition on Friday afternoons starting this coming week, Friday 9th October 2020, and continuing throughout the daylight savings period (except during Green renovations).

These will be a handicapped competitions (in accordance with relevant requirements for handicapping 9 hole events), with daily prizes on offer. Entry fee will be $10, with tee times available from 3:30pm onwards. As with other events, bookings will open a week in advance at 7pm (the first of the timesheets opening at 7pm today).

What better way to lead in to the weekend than with a quick round of competition golf followed by a drink afterwards in the club. We would love to see lots of our members get out and enjoy the course and comraderie. This was a great event last summer, with members enjoying the social atmosphere.

Universal Express 9 hole Championship Shoot Out

In conjunction with the Chook Runs, there will be 9-hole Championship Shoot Out. This event, kindly sponsored by Universal Express, sees players aiming to be one of the 10 players qualifying for the final round Championship to be held on 26th March 2021. Qualifying for the final will be determined by best three round aggregate stableford scores from all Chook Run events played. To allow for green renovations and the impending course rating changes, the first qualifying round of the Shoot Out will be the 30thOctober 2020.

The final round is an elimination style event, with one player being knocked out per hole until we are left with two players battling it out on the 9th hole to take the victory. This is designed to be a fun and different afternoon for all involved, with a few quirks to the usual matchplay style of golf. Further details of the event and associated rules will be available at the start of the first round.

With Universal Express sponsoring the event there is no additional entry fee to be part of the Shoot Out – simply play three or more qualifying rounds of the Chook Run events.

Those of you who entered into the event over the 2019 summer will know that we deferred the Championship event due to COVID restrictions. A decision has now been taken to cancel the event and we are in the process of organising refunds. We are hopeful that the same will not occur in 2021, however, it remains a risk that we will monitor. Further advice on the Championship will be provided in early 2021.

New Course Ratings

New Course Ratings

RE-RATING OF GUNGAHLIN LAKES COURSES

Golf NSW is in the process of undertaking a statistical review of all course ratings through a process ratified by both the USGA and the R&A.  The review of Gungahlin Lakes Golf Course is complete, having been undertaken based on competition scores across the previous 6 years, by both club members and other people that have competed at our course.

Scratch versus Slope

Something that is important to understand is that the only true measure of the difficulty of a golf course is the scratch rating relevant to par, so where a scratch rating is higher than the par of the course that means that the course is that many strokes harder than par for ALL players – even those off scratch. The Slope rating is there to level the playing field for those who are not scratch golfers and the higher the GA handicap the more the player will benefit from the slope rating.

The GLGC committee has considered the recommendations of Golf NSW and agreed to implement the changes from 19th October 2020, immediately after the Club Championships. The changes in respect to our various courses are outlined below.

Women’s Red Course

The report found that the scratch rating needed to come down by 1 and the slope rating needed to go up by 5.

What this means is that across ALL handicaps ranges the course is playing 1 stroke easier than the current rating (i.e scratch rating) but that at the same time the higher handicap players are under represented in the distribution of scores – hence the increase in slope rating.

The table below shows the impact the changes will have on a range of Women’s daily handicaps, generally the daily handicaps with a GA below 24 will either remain the same or go down 1 whilst the daily handicaps above this will go up by one or remain the same.  The combination of the two factors is needed to balance out the distribution of scores more equitably.

  Old New
Par 72 72
Scratch 74 73
Slope 137 142

GA Hcp Dailly Hcp Daily Hcp
9.5 13 12
14.5 18 18
24 29 29
28 33 34
34 40 41
38 45 45

Women’s Yellow Course

In respect to the Women’s Yellow course the scratch rating has increased by 2, up from 67 to 69 and the slope rating has decreased by 4, down from 121 to 117.  The overall impact on daily handicaps is an increase of either 1 or 2 strokes.

Men’s Blue course

The scratch rating of the Men’s Blue Course is unchanged at 73, with the slope rating increasing by 1, from 136 to 137. The change in the slope rating will mean some players will see a 1 shot increase in their playing handicap, with this most likely for players with a GA in excess of 30.

Men’s White Course

The scratch rating of the Men’s White Course has increased by 1, from 70 to 71, with the slope rating increasing by 2, from 125 to 127. The combined change in ratings will see the majority of players having a 1 shot decrease in their playing handicap, but with this being more prevalent for players with GA handicaps below 13.

Men’s Yellow Course

The scratch rating of the Men’s Yellow Course has increased by 1, from 63 to 64, with the slope rating decreasing by 1 from 109 to 108. The combined change in ratings will see the majority of players having a 1 shot increase in the playing handicap, but with this being more prevalent for players with GA handicaps below 25

Implementation of the new course ratings

These changes will be implemented at GLGC on 19 October 2020. Players are not required to take any action. The revised scratch and slope ratings will be updated on our website, the Golf Australia website and printed ‘daily handicap look-up charts’ on the date of the change. Players will see updated playing handicaps on their scorecards or in the MiScore app when playing a competition round after this date.

In updating the scorecards to reflect the changes we will also be using the opportunity to consolidate the Blue, Red and Yellow course information into a single scorecard.

The change to the course ratings will not see a change to the formulas by which a players handicap is calculated.

2020 Gungahlin Lakes Club Championships

2020 Gungahlin Lakes Club Championships

Timesheets for the 2020 Club Championships will open on Thursday 24 September at 7:00pm.

Priority will be given to members entering the Championships over those wanting to play in individual day events. From 24 September to 3 October bookings will only be accepted for players choosing to play in the full 4 day event.

Members can book and pay online via the usual booking sheets. The cost to enter this year’s event is $60. Payment of $60 must be made by credit card at the time of online booking. Booking and payment will also be accepted through the Proshop.

On 24 September, the timesheet for Round 1 only will open. Once player numbers and tee times for Round 1 have been finalised the Match Committee will create bookings for remaining rounds using the same as tee time that a player has booked for Round 1. Players will have the ability to change tee times from 7 pm on 1 October 2020, provided there is a vacant tee time.

At 7pm on 3 October 2020 the timesheets for all rounds will be opened to members wishing to book for individual day competitions, payment to be made online at the time of booking or at the pro shop. Competition fees for individual day events will be $15.

As with the 2019 Club Championships, all play will be from the first tee in each round to give our greens staff maximum opportunity to present the course to the standard expected of our Championships.

It is a requirement that members have paid their 2020-21 subscription fee to play in the Club Championships. Consistent with recent advice, membership fees are payable by 1 October. Any members that book in for the event, but do not subsequently renew their membership, will be removed from the timesheets prior to the commencement of round 1.
