I thought it was timely to give you an update of a number of things going on at the club:
Bunkers
Those that have been playing the course in the last month or so will have noticed that in a couple of the bunkers there is some matting starting to come to the surface. The Greens Committee and Shane are aware of this and work has started to address the issues. Shane and his team have started a program of work that will see each bunker looked at over the winter months and where the matting has come to the surface (this has only occurred of a few holes) repairs will be carried out and then fresh sand will then be added to all of the bunkers which are in need of a top up.
If your ball happens to land in a bunker and your shot is affected by matting that has lifted then you are entitled to free relief under Rule 16 – Immovable Obstructions. Check out the Local Rules for the actual wording on this one. In summary, it reads ……’All manholes covered with artificial turf, 100/150m distance markers, protruding bunker linings, stakes, irrigation control boxes and fixed sprinkler heads on the course are treated as immovable obstructions from which free relief is allowed under Rule 16.1’.
There has been some commentary around the bunker on the second between the Green and the path. Shane is looking at how to make this tidier in appearance and better able to be maintained. Current thinking is that he will soften the slope at the rear of this bunker and we will lay some turf when the growing season comes back to us. He wants to be to be able to mow the grassed slope when the work is done. Until the work is complete, we have marked the area as GUR. Be patient on this one.
25th Anniversary celebrations
Hopefully, you have read my recent post on the upcoming 25 Year Birthday celebrations. This special milestone will be celebrated over the weekend of 2-4 July.
Our 25-Year History Book will be launched at the dinner. This book has been put together by Norm Loughton and a team of volunteers. The book is filled with information and photos across the past 25 years of the Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club and would be a great addition to your coffee table or bookshelf.
The schedule for the weekend will be:
- Friday 2 July – 9-hole competition
- Saturday 3 July – July Monthly medal, followed by the 25th Anniversary dinner at 6:30pm
- Sunday 4 July – Annual Lake-ball event followed by a sausage sizzle in the Spike Bar
The dinner will most likely be held in the Function Room at the Lakes, however, if bookings exceed the capacity of the function room, we may need to relocate to the Ainslie Football Club. We will keep you informed in relation to any necessary change of venue. It would be great to see 200 or more attend this special event.
If you wish to attend to dinner and/or purchase a copy of the History Book, please go to the invitation using this link –25 Year Anniversary Dinner Invitation (final May 21) . When you have opened the invitation, please use the link within the invitation to book and pay for the dinner and your copy of the 25-year History Book. If you plan to attend the dinner, please book as soon possible so we can assess numbers and determine if we need to move to the Ainslie venue. Bookings are required by COB Friday 4 June at the latest.
If you would like to organize a table of 10, please make a note in the booking comments who is on your table. If you do not have a table organized, we will happily allocate you to a table.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Fiona Wicks at wickscanberra.family@gmail.com
To coincide with the 25-year birthday celebrations for the golf club we are running a raffle. Proceeds will go towards course improvements and junior development. 1st prize -$1,500.00 GLGC Pro-shop voucher, 2nd prize – $500.00 GLGC Pro-shop voucher, 3rd prize – $200.00 Ainslie Voucher and 4th prize – $100.00 Ainslie Voucher. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. They can be purchased at the Pro-Shop or committee members will be selling them in the spike bar on competition days. Please note – you cannot use pro shop credits to purchase these tickets. The lucky winner will be announced at the Lake ball lunch on Sunday 4th July.
This is one not to miss and the committee looks forward to welcoming you all to our celebratory weekend.
Player/s Withdrawing from a scheduled game
Please check out the recent post by The Club Captain and the Match Committee on this subject. It gives some instruction as to what players must do if they need to withdraw from a competition round for any reason. Please read this guidance carefully. With the popularity of the MiScore app we need for our players to know how to deal with this type of situation.
Good golfing.
