Drop Zones and Penalty Areas

Drop Zones and Penalty Areas
The GLGC Match committee has considered recent feedback, combined with advice from Golf NSW and agreed to expand the use of drop zones around our course. This is considered necessary due to the layout and natural features of our golf course making it difficult to take relief from penalty areas around the green without getting closer to the hole – and thereby breaking the rules of golf. Holes with such drop zones will be expanded and will now be on holes 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 12, 16, 17 and 18.

Responding to further requests from members we will also trial a drop zone on the 14th hole to assist players that have difficulty carrying the water hazard.
The drop zones and associated penalty area markers will be installed prior to commencement of play on Saturday 28 May 2023. A guidance document has been created to provide further advice on the changes. The local rules have been updated to accommodate these changes. The guidance document and local rules are available from the Local Rules and Course Care page on our website: https://www.gungahlinlakesgolf.com.au/cms/golf/local-rules-and-course-care/

All drop zones, but in particular the 14th hole, will be reviewed at an appropriate of time to understand if introducing the new drop zones has supported fair and equitable competition play for all our members.

We would welcome member feedback on the location and operation of the Drop Zones and local rules. Feedback can be provided to the Match Committee via email to gungahlinlakes@gmail.com.

Penalty Areas – In consultation with the course Superintendent and Golf NSW, a decision was also taken to raise some of our existing penalty area lines away from the water. This is to provide a safer buffer for the grounds staff in areas of the course with steep slopes alongside deep water. This decision was supported by Golf NSW, particularly given the Rules of Golf (rule 17.1b) allows a player to play a ball in a penalty area in the same way as they would a ball in the general area. i.e. a player may ground their club, move loose impediments etc). This has resulted in some areas having two penalty line markings. In such circumstances the relevant penalty area line is the one furthest away from the water line.

Pace of Play

Pace of Play

In recent times it has become apparent that a significant proportion of members playing the course on any given day feel that the time taken to play, or the amount of time spent waiting between shots, was excessive which has negatively impacted on the enjoyment of their round.

Slow play is one of the main causes of frustration for players and we invite all members to work with us to improve this aspect of the game.

To assist staff in managing the pace of play across the course, the club has implemented MiClub’s Pace of Play (POP) module.

The POP module works in conjunction with MiClub’s MiScore digital scoring app to provide our golf operations team with a range of graphical and reporting tools including:

  • Locating players on the course
  • Identify slow play issues as they arise
  • Calculating expected finish times
  • Using historical data to provide in depth reporting analytics
  • Send push notifications during play via MiScore App

In conjunction with the installation of the new software, the club has established a Pace of Play Policy which details expectations, processes and consequences in relation to round times. We encourage all members to familiarise themselves with this policy which can be downloaded via the following link:

Click here to view the pace of play policy {LINK PACE OF PLAY POLICY}

Whilst there can be a number of factors which determine round times such as weather conditions, pin and tee locations, competition format and field size, the club has established expectations for round times during competition play.

Tee BlockPar 3’s (Minutes)Par 4’s (Minutes)Par 5’s (Minutes)Total Round Time
Tee 1Hrs Mins
Tee 2Hrs Mins
Tee 3Hrs Mins
Tee 4Hrs Mins
Tee 5Hrs Mins
Tee 6Hrs Mins

Scrollable

The total round time for a group/player is calculated in reference to their Tee time and the first score submitted for all players in the group.

To gain a comprehensive analysis of the field, members are strongly encouraged to ensure that their MiScore App is providing information to the system. Please find the below steps to optimise MiScore.

  • Start scoring with the app at the beginning of the round and finalise score at the completion of round to obtain correct round time data.
  • In the MiScore menu ensure that ‘locations enabled’ is set to on.
  • Don’t lock your phone once a score is entered, allow the screen saver to engage.
  • Allow Notifications.

The MiScore App location tracking functionality is set to only track a person’s location whilst using the App and within the boundary of the course.

Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our golf operations team.

Gungahlin Lakes Club – system upgrade

Gungahlin Lakes Club – system upgrade

Members

For some time now Ainslie has been working towards a more fully integrated membership management system. This will mean as Golf Club members you will see some changes to the display of prizes.

The key changes you will see are:

Prize Accounts

In respect of prizes, you will see two prize accounts, as follows:

  • Proshop Credit
  • Ball Credit

Prizes will be credited to these accounts via prize allocations for all daily competitions. There will be a slight adjustment to the format of competition prize reports, which will associate a competition prize as either a Dollar or Ball prize. Credits to the member’s account will be as follows:

  • Dollar value prizes will be applied to the Pro shop Credit account with the highlighted dollar value
  • Ball prizes (notably the ball rundown) will be applied to the Ball Credit account to the value of $5 credit per ball prize won
  • All prize credits are available for redemption via the Pro Shop.

The new prize accounts will be available via the member portal with the following functionality:

  • View current account balances
  • View individual purchase line-item transaction details
  • Top up the Proshop Credit account via online credit card payment in the member portal or direct via the Pro Shop point of sale.

These features apply to both desktop and mobile platforms of the member portal.

Members are reminded of the need to redeem their current prize accounts credits before Monday 15 May. After this date, all account balances will be purged and you will need to make individual arrangements with Murray by Monday 15 May to redeem expired account credits. There has been regular communication regarding the need to clear pro shop accounts for several months.

Mobile Member’s Portal

All members are encouraged to access the club’s enhanced mobile enabled member portal.

The mobile site recognizes you are using a mobile device and formats the display into a mobile friendly view. Features of the mobile site include:

  • Ability to make bookings
  • A re-formatted member portal
  • Club news
  • View Live Leader board

To access the mobile version of the member portal via your mobile device, select the MEMBER LOGIN menu from the club’s website at https://www.gungahlinlakesgolf.com.au/cms/

If you have questions regarding this upgrade, please do not hesitate to contact the Golf Manager, Tim Payne via email at gungahlinlakes@gmail.com or via phone on (02) 6180 0821 or the club’s Membership Officer, Marie Barendrecht at Marie.barendrecht@ainsliegroup.com.au or via phone on 6180 0837. Our Golf Manager, Tim is only in the office on Wednesdays and Fridays during the hours 9.00am – 2.00pm.

These changes will take time to bed-down so we ask members to be patient as Ainslie works to upgrade its financial and membership management systems to better service its members.

Regards

Richard Oliver
President
