Slow Play

Slow Play

1: KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP IN FRONT OF YOURS

2: KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP IN FRONT OF YOURS

this is not a typo it is the best way to avoid slow play

3: IT DOES NOT TAKE ALL 4 PLAYERS TO WATCH THE LAST PERSON PUTT.

Once two players have completed putting, they should make their way to the next tee and prepare whilst the others finish. As Club Captain, I would like to see every group do this on every hole (even if you are not falling behind) it is a good practice to get in the habit of doing.

4: ENSURE YOU DO NUMBER 3 FOR EACH HOLE (again, not a typo)

5: HIT A PROVISIONAL BALL IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHERE YOURS FINISHED

(unless you are reasonably certain that it has entered a penalty area) especially in a STROKE ROUND.

6: WALK AT A DESCENT PACE TO YOUR BALL.

So many times a group will walk and congregate around one ball and then the next etc etc. Walk directly to your own ball, play your shot and then help others look if necessary. Everyone meets at the green and tees to “chat”

7: YOU ARE THERE TO PLAY GOLF, NOT FISH

If you are retrieving your ball from a waterway, please do so quickly. Do not spend 5 minutes restocking your bag with golf balls

8: AT GLGC WE PLAY READY GOLF

9: ONCE AGAIN, AT GLGC WE PLAY READY GOLF

when you are ready to play your shot, play it (as long as it is safe to do so) pennants and matchplay have an order of play, it does not apply to our Saturday and Sunday competitions.

10: WHENEVER POSSIBLE, PUTT OUT

marking a one foot putt when you are not interfering with someone’s line to finish that putt is time consuming, be careful and tap it in.

It is nice to see that some members have taken notice of the above, but many still choose to ignore the requirements and just dawdle round the course. Therefore I am posting the message again and will continue to “nag” members until the above is common practice.

Member Update 15 February  – summary from the recent Committee meeting

Member Update 15 February  – summary from the recent Committee meeting

Members

There was no Committee meeting held in January.

The President

  • Front Entrance to the Golf Club – Ainslie is planning to go to a limited number of organisations who can do the work in the next couple of weeks. They are working with SpaceLab (Urban Design firm) on preparation of the necessary ‘to market documents’. Anyone who knows of a suitable organisation who may be interested, let me (email address is in the members directory on the website) have the details and we can pass onto Ainslie.  We have agreed that the Golf Club will contribute to the cost involved.
  • Members number as at 15 February 8 October stands at 704. Both Ainslie and the Golf Club are keen to manage member numbers noting the likely interest from other clubs (mainly Yowani, Federal and Belconnen) due to planned works at their courses.
  • The Committee considered a proposal from the Greens Committee to do some further enhancements to the irrigation system on the course. Ainslie had not budgeted for this work to funded but are comfortable with the club doing this work using funds from the Course Improvement Levy. Likely cost will be in the order of $60,000.

The Treasurer

  • We remain in a strong financial position funds of around $90,000 available. Key areas for expenditure during 2023 will be the front entrance to the club and the tweaking of the irrigation system.

The Captains

  • A request was received to change the date of an Honour board event as it clashed with and outside tournament (CSGA event). It has always been the policy of the Match Committee to not change already publicised Honour Board events. The playing schedule for our Honour Board events is tight when you take into consideration Pennants, the number of Honour board events and the fact that some of them run for over an extended period of time.
  • Slow play is again on the agenda as many members have taken to Facebook to complain. Kevin has stressed to members via Splash, MiClub and Facebook the importance of changing the mentality of members to combat slow play. Committee members were asked to push their playing groups on the day to follow the slow play guidelines if we do the simple things to enhance the pace of play, everyone will have a better game. Key among these is stay in touch with the group in front.

Greens

  • Greens were recently double groomed. A light dusting will occur to smooth out any imperfections (the sand will hardly be noticed by members).
  • Small amount of fungal disease in the greens – namely dollar spot. A small amount of fungicide and a hit of fertilizer should clear this issue up.
  • Bunker matting has been relayed recently in areas where balls seem to congregate (sand level is thin)
  • It has been noticed that balls are staying in the bunker face – most likely due to excess sand being thrown on them. Greens staff will thin this out as the intention of our bunkers is for the ball to roll to the flat of the bunker (the majority of the time).
  • The nursery and halfway house green are being constantly having herbicide applied. The intention is to enlarge the halfway house green and have it sloping correctly to achieve some form of surface drainage.  The nursery is to be used as new turf for damaged areas on greens.  This is being used as a teaching mechanism for our apprentices.
  • The lomandra on the right-hand side of 10 has been removed. The intention is to give 100% certainty that the ball is either up or in.  It is hoped it will speed up play in this area.
  • 13 and 14 walk-off areas need attended to, the drop off to this area is quite pronounced
  • 11th waste area is to be trimmed and poisoned.
  • Path grinding will happen in Winter.
  • Paspalum is being poisoned in the fairways by a product similar to glyphosate called “exonerate”. This is tedious and time-consuming job – but members will note patches in the coming months
  • The blue lines indicate areas of the course where the greens staff are attempting to redefine (such as fairway edges, greens, etc).
  • The bridges will be oiled in the next month or so by Dad’s Army – weather permitting
  • Signs will begin to be taken down – advertising signs as well as advisory signs that are damaged or faded will be removed. Damaged signs that are deemed necessary will be sent to the printers to be re-done (such as the tee sign on 5 which has been hit by a golf ball).

 Other Business

Water Management Plan

  •  Richard presented the latest version of the Water Management Plan. Committee agreed that this is nearly complete and contains all the necessary information – all Committee Members are asked to review and provide any comments.  The Plan will then be sent to Ainslie and the Ainslie Board for their sign-off.  Once sign-off is achieved, it will be posted to the Website.

Slow Play

Slow Play

The ugly problem of slow play is starting to show its face at GLGC again, with a Saturday Stableford round recently taking over 4 hours and 40 minutes to complete for some parts of the field. This is just completely unacceptable; I urge all members to take the following steps to ensure that everyone has an acceptable round on the course.

1: KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP IN FRONT OF YOURS

By following these EASY steps it will make for a quicker and enjoyable round for everyone at our Club. We all pay to be members of this fantastic club and should consider everyone out there, not just ourselves
