Irrigation system upgrade

Irrigation system upgrade

Members,

Starting next week Waterland will be working on course to provide upgrades on our irrigation system.

Work is expected to take two weeks (weather permitting) with only minimal disruption.

Tuesday the 27th will be mapping and marking, with installation work to commence on the 28th. For any competition round that is affected, the Match Committee in consultation with the Greens committee have decided to “close the hole” that is being worked on the day of competition. Each player will automatically be awarded 2 stableford points for that hole. ie If hole 4 is closed, players will play holes 1-3 normally, then walk directly to the 5th tee and continue their round from there. When walking the closed hole, please ensure that you keep clear of all work and machinery for your own safety and that of the workers.

Weekend golfing will not be affected and all trenching and abnormal course conditions caused by the irrigation work will be deemed GUR under a temp local rule that will come into effect next weekend (Match Committee has moved the Midweek Monthly Medal to July 12th so as not to be affected by the work)

We have chosen this time of year as there is less traffic, but we understand that there still will be players on the course so please show patience if held up by any movement of machinery or any of the work.

Good Golfing

Drop Zones and Penalty Areas

Drop Zones and Penalty Areas
The GLGC Match committee has considered recent feedback, combined with advice from Golf NSW and agreed to expand the use of drop zones around our course. This is considered necessary due to the layout and natural features of our golf course making it difficult to take relief from penalty areas around the green without getting closer to the hole – and thereby breaking the rules of golf. Holes with such drop zones will be expanded and will now be on holes 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 12, 16, 17 and 18.

Responding to further requests from members we will also trial a drop zone on the 14th hole to assist players that have difficulty carrying the water hazard.
The drop zones and associated penalty area markers will be installed prior to commencement of play on Saturday 28 May 2023. A guidance document has been created to provide further advice on the changes. The local rules have been updated to accommodate these changes. The guidance document and local rules are available from the Local Rules and Course Care page on our website: https://www.gungahlinlakesgolf.com.au/cms/golf/local-rules-and-course-care/

All drop zones, but in particular the 14th hole, will be reviewed at an appropriate of time to understand if introducing the new drop zones has supported fair and equitable competition play for all our members.

We would welcome member feedback on the location and operation of the Drop Zones and local rules. Feedback can be provided to the Match Committee via email to gungahlinlakes@gmail.com.

Penalty Areas – In consultation with the course Superintendent and Golf NSW, a decision was also taken to raise some of our existing penalty area lines away from the water. This is to provide a safer buffer for the grounds staff in areas of the course with steep slopes alongside deep water. This decision was supported by Golf NSW, particularly given the Rules of Golf (rule 17.1b) allows a player to play a ball in a penalty area in the same way as they would a ball in the general area. i.e. a player may ground their club, move loose impediments etc). This has resulted in some areas having two penalty line markings. In such circumstances the relevant penalty area line is the one furthest away from the water line.
