Ethel Bruce, the wife of Stanley Bruce the 8th Prime Minister of Australia, is the founder of the Bruce Cup in the 1920s and has been previously won by prestigious Golf Clubs such as Royal Sydney GC. Today was GLGC’s first Final to try to win the Bruce Cup played under Scratch conditions. Our first player was Jacqui Baker (playing off a handicap of 14 against an opponent off 9); although trailing by 2 holes early, Jacqui continued her exceptional Pennant season and went on to a determined 3/1 victory. Teenager Eleanor Bance (playing off 11 against an opponent off 7) trailed by 4 holes and was down by 3 holes with 3 to play. However a birdie took her to the 18th hole where she lost by 1. Both Jenny Whittaker and Belinda Stirling were up against opponents with handicap advantages of 4 and 3 strokes respectively and despite their best endeavors were beaten by girls with great short games. The final game had Adele Douglas, who led by 2 holes for most of the front nine and despite having old Engineer/surveyor Norm on the bag, Adele lost 3/2.
Congratulations to Queanbeyan GC who won their 30th Bruce Cup 4 to 1, the GLGC girls who put up a great effort, the caddies (Janet Warden, Janet Jenista, Jeff Le Fevre, Tony Murcutt and Norm Loughton) and supporters. Our girls will be better and with an improved short game will have another go next season
