Renovation Update

Renovation Update
RENOVATION UPDATE
Dear Members,
Just an update on the annual greens renovation and associated works:
As the ongoing saga of the irrigation pumps continue, the greenkeeping team began hollow tyne coring of the practice green on Monday afternoon. It became immediately apparent to Shane and his team that the ground was far too hard to undertake this type of work – it began ripping the turf surface. The ever present issue of the irrigation pumps also led Shane to change plans as a major renovation program (seed, fertiliser, soil conditioners) would require a reliable water source – something we don’t have of late.
The decision was made to use the verti drain – a solid 12mm core that can bust the soil profile down to approximately 100mm (even in the hard conditions).
This process was followed by a heavy double scarify of the greens to a depth of 4mm.
Today and tomorrow the greens will be dusted with topdressing sand, and then fertilised.
The intention for the next 2 months is for the greens to be verti drained every 2-3 weeks. This will leave minimum damage to the greens but will improve drainage, reduce compaction, encourage deeper root systems, improve oxygen exchange, reduce thatch build-up, allow fertilisers and soil amendments to reach deeper into the root zone, thus making nutrient uptake more efficient.
Whilst our original plan was foiled, this new program will help our greens continue to recover and improve overall health despite the challenges we’re facing with the irrigation system. By sticking to this adjusted schedule, we aim to maintain playability while steadily enhancing the condition of the greens. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these issues and implement the best possible solutions for long-term improvement. Rest assured, the greenkeeping team is committed to ensuring that the course remains in top shape, and we will keep you updated on any further developments.
Best Regards,
Mark Hynes
Greens Chair
